We've been going to Burning Man since 1998 and we're going again this year. Burning Man has always been about art. It's one big week-long act of creation and the work from the One Thousand Thousand project has been given away as gifts for many years. The single largest set of pieces that were created for the project were done for Burning Man. We made a series of 2,000 pieces that we gave away in 2000. Most were stamped on the reverse with a space for postage and addresses and were intended to be sent out in the mail from the Black Rock City Post Office. This year we're doing another series of pieces to offer as gifts. We used a handful of Burning Man imagery using a bunch of assorted methods and mediums. Some include lino-cut prints, photo transfers, silkscreen in layers over various backgrounds. There are a number of pieces that we used a section of thin balsa wood attached to the surface and then ran through the press. The lino-cut carvings ended up embossing the wood and the textures turned out to be pretty terrific. |
We expect there to be a couple of hundred pieces done for this set and maybe more depending on time. Some of the pieces are being scanned now and we're including some of them here. [Along with some assorted photos of the overall process.]
